This set of two mimeographed volumes is crucial to the history of labor law, as it represents a genuine attempt to theorize the Vichy regime's projects inspired by corporatism. In this respect, the constant interplay between the medieval or revolutionary organization of labor and the 1941 "Labor Charter" constitutes a most interesting analysis. In our view, it is the most explicit text—while remaining scholarly—on the labor system conceived by Vichy. It is regrettably absent from bibliographies of the period. As a more anecdotal note, the introduction to the second volume provides an analysis of the novel "Premier de cordée" (First on the Rope), explaining its Pétainist and solidaristic ideology, particularly through the metaphor of the climbing rope where the fall of one leads to the fall of all, where everyone's fate is "linked" under the direction of a "first."
