Best known for his work on legal history (Précis d'histoire du droit, Le mariage au Moyen-âge…), the author here presents an exposition of the fundamental principles of French law intended for a wider audience than just university students. It is particularly interesting for the sections of general considerations preceding each series of developments (which, moreover, follow the order in which the various Codes are presented), revealing a very rigid, even reactionary, conception of the foundations of law (see, in particular, the attacks directed against Darwinists, Comteans, and utilitarians). He advocates both the abolition of administrative courts and the maintenance of political inequality between men and women. Uncommon (not found at Berkeley).
