The first of the two works in this volume is a historical reflection on the Revolution of 1830, largely self-justifying. The second is a major work on the reform of criminal law, challenging the French penal system established by the Code of 1807. It is part of the reformist movement that, under the Restoration, paved the way for the reforms of 1832. The main points addressed by D. are the shortcomings of the criminal investigation procedure, abuses in the organization of the jury, the system of punishments, and in particular the impossibility of recognizing mitigating circumstances. On this subject, there are some excellent pages on the necessity of abolishing the death penalty. Finally, a few specific points on press offenses, the use of force by the police, emergency laws, duels… The work concludes with a memorandum written by Dupin in 1815 containing a general dissertation on the necessity for laws to be general and not specific, to regulate only the future without being able to react to the past, on the separation of the three powers, and the contrary nature of violating this principle of separation to the Charter.
