As J.-L. Halpérin points out (no. 34), Aubry and Rau “brought about a true revolution in the method of expounding civil law. Not confining themselves to following the Civil Code article by article, they sought to create a reasoned treatise by combining exegetical methods with dogmatic teaching. They also aimed to unite theory and practice by combining the pure logic of a precise and rigorous text with the wealth of extensive notes devoted to case law and the discussion of legal opinions.” Our copy is taken from the best edition, the one usually cited (J.-L. Halpérin, loc. cit.).
