An important monograph on the family in the Assyro-Babylonian world. The author strives to clarify the terminology once again: tirhatu, a gift from the fiancé to the fiancée's father, and not a purchase price; seriqtu, dowry, which always remains the wife's property; nudunnû, a gift from the husband to his wife, which could be passed down to the children; dumâqi, jewelry that a husband has his wife wear. According to van Prag, a contract was generally required for the marriage to be recognized as such, and it was precisely the tirhatu that proved its existence. The wife's residence varied: in her father's house, in her husband's house, but sometimes the bride had her own house.
