This catalogue accompanied the exhibition held in March 1958 at the National Institute of Industrial Property in Paris. Beyond the documentation and presentation of the exhibits, it contains several technical and legislative articles on the exhibition's theme, tracing technological progress since the 19th century. Various branches and sectors are featured, with developments highlighted, and some famous patents are showcased (food, transportation, textiles, engines and machine tools, public works, metallurgy, arquebuses and artillery, horology, legal metrology, electricity, chemistry, lighting, cinema, etc.). In the 1960 issue of the Revue d'histoire des sciences (Review of the History of Science), Maurice Bert, in his review, considered that "by its wealth of documentation and the care taken in its presentation, this catalogue constitutes a valuable tool for all historians of technology. Perhaps it is regrettable that the very conditions of its distribution prevented it from reaching the wide audience it deserved." » (M. Bert, Revue d'histoire des sciences, 1960, n° 13-2, p. 180-181)
