First edition in French. Originally published in Latin under the title "De usu & authoritate juris civilis Romanorum, per dominia principum Christianorum" in London in 1653. Only the section on civil law in England was never translated into English; it was added to the English translation of Claude Joseph de Ferrière's *Histoire du droit Romain* in 1724. The work is an interesting history of Roman civil law, among the earliest written in Europe. It is divided into two parts. The first part traces the history of Roman law, from antiquity, through the law of Justinian, followed by feudal law and canon law. The second part of the work discusses the use of Roman law, or Roman Civil Law, in the various nations of Europe, and particularly in England. The author's aim was to refute the notion that England did not use Roman Civil Law at all. However, the section concludes with the prediction that Roman Civil Law would not last long in the history of England.
