    Undoubtedly one of the most important texts on the constitutional theory of the Third Republic, it contains fundamental developments on the theory of suffrage, the role of the head of state, and the parliamentary system, the author particularly challenging the logic of this system. It was published in 1868, the year of the original edition, with no fewer than nine editions appearing, though these should more accurately be described as reprints since they are all identical.
