The Anton Matthæus family was a significant dynasty in Belgian-Dutch law during the 16th and 17th centuries. Following their great ancestor Jean, three of his descendants, named Anton (I, II, III), were professors at the Academy of Utrecht (Trajecti ad Rhenum) and published numerous treatises recounting their work. Our work is based on the writings of Anton II, the most important of the three and especially known for his works on criminal law (for a recent English translation and annotated edition, see Hewette ML. Juta 1987-1996 in 3 vols.). Here we have a series of seven answers to questions on the rules of civil and criminal procedure, providing one of the most solid foundations in this field (see, for example, the discussions on the law of evidence, the enforcement of judgments, the structure of the judicial sentence, the rules of prosecution, etc.). A superb copy preceded by a beautiful frontispiece.
