in-4, full mottled brown calf, spine with raised bands and decoration, title page in burgundy morocco, marbled edges, fillet on the edges, vignettes and tailpieces, (traces of wear on the covers with small losses on the second, corners very slightly bumped), good copy nonetheless, VIII-583-138-107 p.
Apart from his refutation of Beccaria, Muyart's works on criminal law follow a deliberate plan: "Institutes of Criminal Law" constitutes a general treatise on the subject, while "The Criminal Laws of France in Their Natural Order" leans more towards the philosophy of law. In contrast, the present text is essentially focused on procedure, notably offering the best commentary ever written on the famous ordinance of 1670. It is worth noting that the author also provides a systematic commentary on D'Agesseau's 1737 ordinance on forgery and, more generally, on the entire body of evidence law. Overall, a major and highly regarded text.
