Although R. is often considered inferior to Muyart or Jousse in his work on criminal law, the particular merits of this comprehensive work must nevertheless be emphasized: First, it brings together substantive criminal law and procedure in a single text, unlike many others, notably Muyart. Second, it is of high quality in its method of exposition. Finally, it concludes with a particularly useful index of all the important texts on criminal law of the Ancien Régime from 1650 to the date of publication. Add to this a table of approximately 40 pages, which allows for very efficient searches, and some curiosities such as the methodical description of the procedures in trials of corpses (that is, suicides), in which the author emphasizes that, based on a 1712 royal declaration, “when corpses of persons suspected of not having died a natural death are found in the city and suburbs of Paris…it is ordered that one proceed diligently to the location, draw up a report of the condition in which the body was found, affix a seal to the forehead, and have it examined by surgeons in the author's presence, and immediately inform and hear those who are able to testify about the cause of death, the place of residence, and the habits of the deceased…”. The delights of the invention of forensic science.
