(Dupin no. 1001). The complete works of Despeisses contain a treatise on the law of obligations, a treatise on testamentary succession, a treatise on civil practice, criminal practice and seigneurial rights, and a treatise on the taille and other taxes. Although he died in 1658, he remains a jurist known for his works on public law, yet he is one of the great forgotten figures in the history of the law of obligations. Indeed, his treatise on this subject comprises a volume of over 800 pages, and is thus considerably longer than any other 17th- or even 18th-century works on the same topic. His “Criminal Practice,” a text predating Colbert's ordinances, should also be re-evaluated, as it reveals a tendency toward moderation that contrasts sharply with the ultimately repressive aim of the 1670 ordinance. Our edition is a reproduction of the folio edition published in 1750, in the form of a large quarto volume.
