(Dupin no. 737). This text is the scholarly translation, carried out in the 18th century by a specialist in Norman customary law, of Littleton's Institutes, one of the most important English jurists of the 15th century, who compiled all of Anglo-Norman customary law into a coherent corpus. From an epistemological point of view, this text marks undeniable progress, even compared to texts such as Bourjon's Droit commun de la France or Loisel's Institutes coutumières. This is evidenced in particular by the Old English dictionary, the scholarly translation, and the attention to bibliography and historical detail found throughout. It also marks a significant step in the history of codification, demonstrating that even in customary law regions, codification had been considered for a long time, perhaps even longer than in France. A rare text.
