in-4, half brown calf with corners early 19th century, smooth spine decorated, black title page, yellow edges, (boards rubbed, title page missing, old annotations, ink stain not affecting the text), 11 f.-369-256 p.-2 f.
This hard-to-find text, aside from a relatively brief first section on the status of Savoy, delves much deeper into criminal law, offering striking descriptions of crimes (e.g., false coats of arms, name changes, or, more seriously, contempt for images of the prince, magicians and sorcerers, or even more serious offenses like incest and sodomy—the beginning of the chapter on this last point being the most lurid: “the crime of sodomy, which horrifies angels and men…”). The same precision is evident in the procedural details, particularly in the descriptions of various methods of questioning and torture. A beautiful, archaic impression of Chambéry.
