The book includes, in particular: \"The Paris Chamber of Accounts in the 16th Century,\" with a remarkable examination of the archives; the Chambers of Justice established under the Ancien Régime to repress abuses committed by financiers; the control exercised by the Court of Accounts and the Prefectural Councils over clandestine accounting (which offers a compelling reflection on the foundations of the concept of de facto management); the origins of accounting among the Romans; and the control of public spending by the Court of Accounts and the legislative branch (by Attorney General Audibert, with insightful reflections on the beginnings of the Third Republic from this perspective). It also includes biographies of all the members of the Court of Accounts who died or were appointed to it during this period.
