The "Commentary on the Edict of the Small Dates" is one of Dumoulin's most controversial texts and the foundation of modern Gallicanism. Under the guise of challenging the Roman chancery's authority to assess the validity of benefices and all related legal acts, Dumoulin presents a rigorous argument that jurisdiction over matters concerning French territory can only lie with French courts—and more specifically, royal courts. Following his article-by-article commentary on Henry II's edict reaffirming royal jurisdiction on the matter, there is a second text denouncing papal abuses, where the legalistic tone gives way to the vindictive, demonstrating the impossibility for popes to interfere in French law, a principle that has persisted since the early Middle Ages. This text went through two original editions, one in Paris and the other in Lyon; another edition appeared in Basel the same year. But it wasn't until the 17th century that this text was republished. Our copy is from the original Lyon edition. Very rare.
