(Berkeley BQV113. C47). Under this title, a general reflection on the sources of law, the theological foundation of canon law, and its relationship to other legal systems. Analyses are also included on the authority (and infallibility) of the Pope, as well as on the nature and quality of different political regimes. Particular emphasis is placed on the passages concerning the origins and nature of democracy, which are more nuanced than one might initially expect. Also highlighted are the challenges to the doctrine of natural law, especially that of Pufendorf. Written in very accessible Latin, this is an important work for understanding the scope of the Church's legal and political doctrine at the end of the 18th century.
