(Dramard No. 106). Demante's Civil Code course is cited by all authors as one of the standard treatises (see, for example, M. Planiol's Treatise on Civil Law in the list of "most frequently cited works on civil law"). Demante began his career contributing to Thémis, where he was one of the principal authors. He then worked with Ledru-Rollin at the "Journal du Palais" and was elected in 1848 as a Republican. He died in 1855. Like many other major treatises on civil law, his bibliography is somewhat complex. He first published a "Program of the Course on French Civil Law" in 1830-31, which received two new editions in 1835 and then 1840 (in 3 volumes). These texts, in themselves, already had the scope of an elementary treatise. From 1849 onward, he decided to publish his complete course and undertook the writing of the first four volumes. The interruption caused by his death was short-lived, and Colmet de Santerre, his student, resumed the text, retaining the chapter headings from the “course program…” mentioned above. He completed the ninth volume in 1880 and republished the earlier volumes, which had long been out of print. While J.-L. Halpérin (no. 32) finds Demante somewhat timid in his commentary, despite his reformist character and his training within the historical school, it must be emphasized, firstly, that the period of composition during the early Second Empire likely led a republican author, close to Ledru-Rollin, to exercise caution, and secondly, that Demante was always closer to the modernists than to the conservatives of the historical school, including within the Thémis.
