An examination of this text reveals a genuine break with the previous generation (Cormenin, Gerando, and to a lesser extent Macarel), a break perhaps less attributable to the particular quality of the thought than to the fact that the solutions, tested, debated, and enriched by a growing body of case law, are more certain and stable, making it possible to trace the fundamental principles more clearly, even if the positions taken remain open to discussion. Indeed, one of the main strengths of this treatise is its abundance of maxims and general principles.
