16 vols. in-8, half olive calf, smooth spine decorated, (slight traces of wear on the spines and edges, corners very slightly bumped, some foxing and underlining), a good copy despite the aforementioned defects.
The last and most voluminous of the author's texts, this work is nonetheless one of the fundamental sources for the study of the drafting of the Civil Code. The author has more often been criticized for turning the minutes he collected into a veritable publishing enterprise. Included are a set of crucial handwritten documents for the history of the publication of this text, namely 15 letters signed (LS or ALS) to its publishers Treuttel and Würtz, among which are the publishing contract for the work, various letters relating to advance payment, the preparation of the prospectus for the work, and remarks on an article by Isambert: “Nothing is better than what Isambert says about false jurisprudence and the uncertainty of commentaries drawn from the author's own mind. I like to see him combat these false systems, which are beginning to gain some strength and which would amount to nothing less than ruining the Codes and depriving us of all the benefits they were intended to provide, as I stated in Chapter 3 of my conclusion.” The remainder of this letter is, moreover, a discussion on the title of the work; Following disagreements with the publisher, we also find an arbitration agreement with J. B. Duvergier and J. Renouard as arbitrators, followed by a letter signed by Locré confirming the outcome of the arbitration award. Added to this first set of documents is a second, less flattering one for the archivist of the Council of State at the time, Renouf, who demands that the printer promptly pay him the sums due under the rights assignment granted to him by Baron Locré. This latter set of documents makes it particularly clear that Locré did not write this work alone, but rather entrusted a large part of the writing and compilation of the minutes to the archivist of the Council of State, a fact not apparent from the book's entries. This second set comprises 20 documents.
