2 vols. in-4, mottled blond calf, spine with 5 raised bands decorated, marbled edges, text decorated with vignettes and initial letters, (some scratches on the covers, corners bumped), a fine copy despite these few defects, library mark, XVIII-684 / 529 p.
The last effort of the Ancien Régime doctrine on the law of fiefs, this text reaffirms the principle of the King's authority over the nobility, right from the title page: “This work establishes firstly that the original laws of fiefs are those of the State…no fief nor any inheritance that is not under the authority of the King and his crown.” Thanks to its dictionary format, it is very accessible, and we should particularly highlight the sections (under “King of France” and “Introduction”) devoted to the fact that customs are merely territorial statutes that are not binding on the King. Important.
