Nineteenth-century Le Figaro contained not only the society pages we find today, but also a less official chronicle of the disputes between gentlemen and the means by which they were settled. This text recounts a trial between the editor-in-chief of Le Figaro and one of his informants from the nobility, concerning their respective responsibility in a duel that resulted in the death of one of the participants. The entire social class of the Second Empire is brought to life in this trial.
