(BNF E1005, Berkeley BQV 192 B2 R5 (same edition), missing from Cujas). Treatise on the legal status of persons who are outside the fold of the Church (extra ecclesia gremium existentium), including Jews and non-believers, the excommunicated, heretics, apostates from religion or orders, schismatics, but also catechumens and, above all—because particular caution is required in this area—"neophytes," that is, persons newly in a state (newly baptized, newly ordained, etc.), who must be the object of particular vigilance during this time and be subject to special supervision by the bishop. The main issue for all these persons arises from the fact that they are subject to partial legal incapacity by virtue of their state. Within each of these categories, this work, clearly influenced by the Counter-Reformation, offers the major advantage of systematically examining the legal effects attached to these statutes. It is worth noting, for example, that an entire section is devoted to the status of Jews.
