(Dupin no. 1198, Cujas no. 25358, 1583 edition). This is a very important text of criminal law from the Ancien Régime, particularly given its publication date, for several reasons. First, it is one of the very first, in the 16th century, to outline a distinction between criminal and civil sanctions. Furthermore, it establishes the principle of a system of legal punishment. Beyond these theoretical points, one finds more picturesque descriptions of the sanctions to be inflicted on "drunkards" and "insolent lawyers," with some piquant phrases that one enjoys noting: "Some do not proceed rigorously in their work, they seek every practice to fill their pockets with delays and subterfuge, and make cases almost immortal to extract more money." The six virulent pages on the subject conclude with the following formula: "Medicine and jurisprudence give gold and silver in abundance." Rare.
