Of this collection of three treatises, the last, a treatise on the legal capacity of the blind, deaf, and mute, is particularly noteworthy. This text is crucial in many respects. First, it offers a philosophical reflection on the consequences of physical disability on intellectual faculties (see in particular Chapter 2, paragraph 3, “nihil est in intellectu, quod prius non fuerit in sensu”; this text also takes on a singular Cartesian tone to emphasize that for this type of disability, “intellectus est tan quam tabula rasa”). Beyond a general description of the nature and scope of each of these infirmities, the text is also valuable for its reflection on the legal capacity associated with disability (the capacity to testify, to enter into contracts, and to make wills). Exceptional and rare (not held by the National Library of France).
