6 vols. in-4, full calf, spine with raised bands decorated, marbled edges, tan pages and lower right, titles in red and black, double column printing, magnificent full-page portraits of the author on vols. 1 and 3, and half-page on vol. 6, (scuffs on the covers, tears on some headcaps, bumped corners, foxing).
Martin de Azpilcueta (1492-1586) is, after Victoria, one of the major jurists of 16th-century Spain. This rare set, in a beautiful Venetian printing, constitutes a virtually complete collection of his works (with the possible exception of the “Sacrorum canonum et enchiridion”). Of particular note are the two volumes devoted to the consiliorum seu responsorum, which contain crucial analyses on the legal regime of the Inquisition, the legal status of heretics and apostates, the status of Jews and Saracens (vol. 4, p. 233 ff.), usury, and other matters. Very rare. The Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) does not hold an edition of these complete works. Overall, a pleasing copy, with some fine Renaissance-style portraits of the author.
