This essential work compiles the deliberations of the conference, which included members of the King's Council and Parliament, on the draft civil and criminal ordinances of 1667 and 1670, based on the minutes preserved by the conference clerk. The text comprises, article by article, the draft submitted to the conference, a summary of its deliberations, and the final adopted text. It is therefore a striking precursor to the Council of State's opinion on the Civil Code. An examination of the deliberations reveals a considerable degree of freedom of expression among the Council members. For example, on the issue of torture, the President declares that, personally, he would favor its abolition when its purpose is to extract a confession, reflecting the debates that were already taking place before the 18th century in circles closest to power on this subject (criminal ordinance, p. 224). This edition is the first to present the complete text of these deliberations (Camus no. 702).
