    “In this study, the author has successfully combined the various qualities expected of him by his academic credentials: meticulous precision in the analysis of texts, a solid knowledge of legal sources, and, along with his overall perspective, a clarity of style for which the reader is greatly grateful. The object of the work is clearly defined in the introduction: ‘Libertinitas is a factual and complex state, resulting from a prior event, servitude, which grants freedom to the individual, but by placing him in a subordinate position with respect to his former master and inferior to those who have never experienced slavery. It thus creates civil and social inequality. Hence, three sets of questions arise: 1) how did the servus become liber? 2) what were the relations between the patronus and the libertus? 3) what was the social condition of the libertinus?’ While remaining rigorously within the limits of his subject, the author has had to touch upon many things; In particular, he had the merit of not isolating the question of freedmen, which is the special subject of his study, from the circumstances which engendered and explain it.” (Frank d’Arvert, International Review of Education, no. 1/1888, p. 109).
