Even though, theoretically, Mourlon can be classified among the secondary authors of the School of Exegesis (in agreement with J.-L. Halpérin), he nonetheless possesses two distinctive features that make his work an important text. First, its presentation in three volumes. It is one of the first to follow the expository plan of the Civil Code in law faculties. This organization of the text would be reproduced a few years later by the elementary treatises of Baudry-Lacantinerie and Planiol. Secondly, within this category of elementary treatises, it clearly became a standard reference, and Dramard (no. 112) speaks in these terms: “The sustained success of this work has caused all previous elementary books of the same kind to be neglected. It is an excellent guide for young people in schools, and professors, whose teaching he often analyzes and comments on, generally recommend it to their students.” There is nothing to detract from the assessment given a few years ago by Mr. Dalloz: “Under the modest title of written repetitions, Mourlon has published a book that has long enjoyed a high and well-deserved esteem in schools. It is indeed one of those good elementary books that have rendered eminent service to legal studies and whose real scope and merit make it worthy of a place in the jurist's library. It is one of those valuable works that can be equally useful to those who study it for instruction and to those who consult it for clarification.”
