"The work of Messrs. Duhamel and Dill Smith is by two lawyers, one French, the other English, both well-versed in French and English law. In seven chapters, it shows us, on points of particular interest to practitioners, the solutions offered by English law in matters where the rules of English law appear to offer the French a useful subject for reflection: criminal investigation and guarantees of individual liberty, press regulations, police rights, respect for the judiciary, judicial organization, and procedure. As they make clear in their preface, their intention is by no means to advise the French to adopt English law wholesale on these various points; rather, they felt it useful 'to open new perspectives, to highlight interesting possibilities,' to show how, across the Channel, various abuses have been combated with some success and certain problems resolved that have not yet been successfully addressed in France. The book by Messrs. Duhamel and Dill Smith, by presenting certain British institutions in their concrete form, constitute a very useful complement to the works more focused on history and subject matter that previously existed to introduce English law to the French. We highly recommend reading them. (RIDC No. 1/1954, p. 187 et seq.).
