"The civil status of persons is divided into eight books. The first deals with political and civil liberty, the various social orders, and the condition of land in Gaul, before and after the Frankish settlement. In the second book, the author sets forth the origin of slavery and its different forms, and in the third, the origin and character of the nobility. The fourth and fifth books are devoted to the laeti, latic lands, and the mortmains that descend from them. Allodial lands, lods (transfer rights), and the right of redemption form the subject of the sixth book. In the seventh, Perreciot addresses the question of fiefs and examines, in this regard, the systems of Montesquieu, Mably, and President Hénault. Finally, the eighth book presents a summary of the legislative reforms that the author calls for from the royal power, reforms that the Revolution undertook to implement." And that, a few years later, the work was completed by a series of one hundred and fifty-two charters, which, under the name of proofs, form the supporting documentation for the book. Of these documents, almost all borrowed from the archives of Franche-Comté, the oldest dates from 924, the most recent from 1336. The extreme rarity of Perreciot's book, originally printed in a small number of copies, inspired his heirs with the fortunate idea of publishing a new edition, at the beginning of which they placed a biographical and literary notice about the author. This tribute to his father's memory is at the same time a service rendered to those who undertake the arduous study of our ancient institutions. For, despite the errors into which the author's systematic approach sometimes led him, his book remains valuable to consult today, and worthy, as a precursor, of taking an honorable place alongside the fine works of contemporary scholarship on the same subject. » (Marion Jules, Bibliothèque de l'école des chartes, n° 7/1846, p. 586 et seq.).
