The Civil Code was originally published separately, in the order of adoption of the different titles. Private publishers undertook to compile them all, resulting in editions that are commonly referred to as "pre-original". After the adoption of the law of 30 Ventôse Year XII (March 21, 1804), which brought all these titles together under the name "Civil Code of the French", the Imprimerie Nationale, in conjunction with one of the most important private legal publishers of the time, Rondonneau, took the initiative of this original and formal edition, which appeared simultaneously in several formats (quarto, octavo and 32mo).
