    This is the last, incomplete edition of Toullier's treatise. His successor explains in a lengthy biographical preface that, mindful of respecting the author, he took care not to alter the original thought by placing his notes in brackets. It is one of the most important treatises on civil law from the early 19th century. J.-L. Halpérin (HDPF since 1804, no. 31) demonstrates that this treatise surpasses all its predecessors in scope and established Toullier's renown. The author emerges as an Enlightenment figure committed to individual liberty, and his conceptions of natural law led him to transcend the narrow confines of a purely exegetical commentary on the Civil Code. Unfortunately, Toullier did not have time to complete his work, and it was Duvergier who continued the missing Titles of the Civil Code.
