    As J.-L. Halpérin points out (no. 34), Aubry and Rau “brought about a true revolution in the method of presenting civil law. Not confining themselves to following the Civil Code article by article, they sought to create a reasoned treatise by combining exegetical methods with dogmatic teaching. They also aimed to unite theory and practice by combining the pure logic of a precise and rigorous text with the wealth of voluminous notes devoted to jurisprudence and the discussion of opinions.” It is worth noting that subsequent editions underwent only minor modifications: the seventh edition had only seven revised volumes, and the eighth, only one. Bartin, who in the previous edition had revised only volumes V to XII, corresponding to the subjects he was particularly interested in, then decided to complete his revision in a new edition. Thus, while Bartin explained in his preface the necessity of retaining elements from the fourth edition… The plan is simply to update the notes; P. Esmein clearly intends not to "limit himself to a mere update." Thus, we find ourselves here with one of the last editions that truly retains references to the original text by Aubry & Rau. Moreover, Esmein does not hesitate to dismantle the thinking of its founders and replace it with contradictory contemporary case law.
