    "The main objective of this vivid sketch is not so much to describe and properly present what is new, although this objective is included, as to recall and impress upon what is old. The authors are, in fact, repeating a story often told before, which has unfortunately also been often forgotten, and once again, in recent years, with a similar result. There are indeed a few new incidents, but most are, unfortunately, familiar; and similar causes have not had different effects. In a short first part, certain 'elementary' notions about money are skillfully brought to the fore for the benefit of the lay public, at a time when the most authoritative and best-educated people, who 'should' have opposed 'inflation,' have succumbed to the subtle infection of 'error' about the character of banknotes and the nature of exchange." The following hundred pages are filled with a comprehensive picture showing the dry light of calamitous experience, monotonously repeated under the same somber guise, or the same disguise, on every occasion, of “inflationism” in the past. Yet the severe lesson, taught in such a grim manner, was neglected, or ignored, or dismissed, by the belligerent nations during the trial period of the recent war, and, even more imprudently or fatalistically, by some of them during the period following the armistice; and in their third section, our authors do not unjustly blame the conduct of France, Germany, England, the United States, and Russia during this troubled and distressing period. The extent of their misdeeds may have varied, and more than one possible instrument was used to varying degrees by the countries concerned, including, we might add, by the neutral nations. But, without exception, they deserved the general condemnation pronounced here.
