It was unimaginable that the subject of donations could give rise to a work of such scope. However, Dramard (no. 1708) emphasizes that “G.’s work was for a long time the best on this part of the Code.” It also includes a treatise on adoption and a treatise on informal guardianship, accompanied by a historical discourse on the law of adoption. Although not belonging to the Thémis school, Grenier was one of the most highly regarded authors by this journal (see, for example, the articles by Athanase Jourdan, Vol. V, p. 37). Moreover, he clearly adopts a historicist perspective, as evidenced by his introductory chapter, “Historical Discourse on the Old Legislation Relating to Donations, Wills, and All Other Gratuitous Dispositions,” which is a general reflection on the status of contracts, a topic uncommon in early exegetical texts. It is worth noting that the spine of the book is bound with 18th-century notarial acts on parchment.
