The first work to cover such a long period in the history of French commerce, and also the most in-depth. The structure is classic and unsurprising, relying on key dates in French (and international) trade. The bibliography, while not exhaustive, is also clear, even if some omissions are regrettable. This work is particularly interesting for its broad and thorough study, on the one hand, of currency and interest rates, the monetary revolution of the 16th century, and on the other hand, of economic infrastructure: roads, canals, ports, etc. These are questions closely linked to the political economy and economic geography so dear to the author. A sought-after and frequently cited work.
