This concise history of law, written in the first half of the 19th century, lacks the scholarly rigor of works by Laferrière or, later, Esmein, but that is precisely what makes it so charming: the author is deeply interested in legal history through the lens of legal doctrine, offering vivid and engaging portraits of the great legal authors of past centuries. He doesn't hesitate to clearly distinguish between good and bad works, a distinction that will disappear in more formally scholarly studies. The book concludes with a delightful critique of the School of Exegesis: “Codification will cease to be a benefit if its result is to imprison the entire science of law within the few texts of a code.”
