This excellent thesis is a seminal work on compensation and counterclaims (see R. Mendegris, *La nature juridique de la compensation*, LGDJ thesis, 1969, bibliography). Contrary to popular belief, the study of Roman law on the same subject remains highly valuable for its historical analysis of the concept. It is a reference work on par with Albert Desjardins's 1864 publication.
