"The publication of a concise Code for Students had been undertaken by this publishing house before the war, with the texts arranged to correspond to the curriculum. Only Volume I, corresponding to the first-year program, had been published. Instead of continuing this fragmented edition of the Code, it seemed preferable to present a complete edition, as first-year students sometimes need to consult texts that are not part of their syllabus. This Civil Code, supplemented by the most important laws of civil law that were not included, will allow undergraduate and doctoral students to have all the texts they need in a compact format and under accessible conditions. It is hoped that everyone will understand the importance of a precise knowledge of these texts. The commentaries given in lectures and in books cannot replace this knowledge; they are supplementary and lose their pedagogical value if the articles themselves are not consulted." Many exam candidates, however, have never bothered to consult it and demonstrate a complete inability to use a legal code. It is to help students counteract this unfortunate tendency that we have encouraged publishers to release this concise code specifically designed for them. Those who are more diligent will undoubtedly prefer an annotated code, where they will find useful case law references. The present publication is not intended to replace these annotated codes, but to supplement them for all those who, until now, have refrained from obtaining them. It will also be useful outside of universities to anyone who needs access to up-to-date texts, regardless of any case law references. (Foreword by André Rouast)
