"The affirmation of Public Faith, the Caisse's motto to this day, initiated a series of innovations that contributed to building confidence in state credit and, beyond that, to the development of the financial system as well as to learning about the parliamentary regime, true pillars of early 19th-century France. The genesis of any institution responds to the diverse, even contradictory, expectations of the various actors involved." The six studies compiled by Alya Aglan, Michel Margairaz, and Philippe Verheyde, based on the use of original sources, aim to shed light on the history of the first three decades of a unique dual institution, the Sinking Fund and the Deposit and Consignment Fund, from its creation in 1816 to 1848. Particular attention has been paid to the multiple implications—institutional, political, financial, and doctrinal—that accompanied the operation of this dual institution, placing it both within the social and political forces of the time and within the money markets, alongside other public and private actors in the financial sector.
