Gaudemet describes Laurent's work in these terms: \"The Principles of Civil Law, a colossal work in 33 volumes, began publication in 1869 and continued with astonishing rapidity. Laurent's work is not French; it belongs to Belgian scholarship. The author was a professor in Ghent from 1841 until his death in 1887. Yet this book is closely linked to the French classical school. Faced with the tumultuous fantasies of Troplong and the overly uncertain eclecticism of Demolombe, Laurent, like Taullier, sought to return to pure classical principles.\" It is thus one of the finest expressions of the School of Exegesis, and at the same time one of the last. Laurent would, moreover, become a favorite target of civil law reformers, and especially of Émile Lambert.
