“All of Maurice Hauriou’s analyses, as has often been pointed out, are imbued with sociology. But this focus on the sociological spirit animating his various writings has unfortunately obscured an essential dimension of his intellectual endeavor: Hauriou the sociologist. His sociological writings, beginning with *Traditional Social Science* and *Lessons on the Social Movement*, are, admittedly, often considered youthful indiscretions. The Toulouse professor supposedly only fully realized his talent as a jurist by renouncing an improbable sociological ambition. Yet, such an approach completely ignores Maurice Hauriou’s famous and frequently quoted recommendation: ‘A little sociology takes you away from the law, a lot brings you back to it.’ Far from being a pleasant (and futile) pastime in his intellectual journey, the period of sociological training and theorizing (1880–1900) constitutes an essential stage, consubstantial with his doctrinal developments.” The influence of social science certainly explains the promotion of administrative science. More broadly still, there is no administrative thought in Hauriou, no theory of the State, nor even concepts of institution, social constitution, conduct, or administrative management without a detour through social science. Far from constituting a secondary field of knowledge, sociology, insofar as it conforms to the teachings of Catholicism, presents itself as the condition of possibility for a science of social and political organization that reconciles the collective with the individual.
