Boutaric is the most important of the Toulouse jurists of the Old Regime. After a career that began at the bar, he was appointed in 1709 to the chair of French law at the University of Toulouse, a position he held until his death in 1733. His lectures had a considerable impact, although they were not published during his lifetime. However, their posthumous publication was a major publishing success, and several reprints were published within twenty years. His treatise on seigneurial rights also enjoyed this success, particularly due to its exceptionally methodical presentation (Part One, On Justice and the Rights Dependent Thereon; Part Two, On the Rights Owed to the Feudal Lord by the Vassal; Part Three, On Leases by Permit or Rent and the Rights Owed to the Permit-Led and Direct Lord). It contains a very precise analysis of the entire feudal tax system.
