The book begins thus: “This book is not an indictment of the men of September 4th. Each of us has assessed and judged them, and, like Pilate, they may wash their hands and shift the blame from one to another, but they will not be absolved. Neither skillful speeches nor explanatory pamphlets will restore their popularity. We have seen these smooth talkers at work, these eloquent writers of posters and proclamations; today, we remain deaf to their oaths, unmoved by their protests, and in response to everything they say to obtain pardon or acquittal, we publish this collection of official documents, which will serve as a history of the gentle sieges of Paris. Never has a government in the world enjoyed such great prestige. The fanaticism of the Fatherland made each of us a slave to those who organized the National Defense.” This collection will be useful, we believe, because it is the justification of Paris, and if we are publishing it now, it is because it was only due to appear the day after the one who had the honor of governing Paris would have taken to the podium to defend his conduct or that of his colleagues.
