As J.-L. Halpérin points out (no. 34), Aubry and Rau "brought about a true revolution in the method of presenting civil law. Not confining themselves to following the Civil Code article by article, they sought to produce a reasoned treatise by combining the exegetical method and dogmatic teaching. They also wanted to associate theory and practice by combining the pure logic of a precise and rigorous text with the wealth of voluminous notes devoted to jurisprudence and the discussion of opinions."
