    B. was one of the principal editors of the Thémis. The text he offers here constitutes one of the major contributions of 19th-century French Roman law scholarship. It provides, in effect, a new translation of Justinian's Institutes, considerably more scholarly than Berthelot's. It is also enriched with important explanatory notes. Overall, it remains an important source for understanding the law of the Institutes even today. This translation forms the first part of the collection of Roman law texts published by M. Blondeau.
