A canonist, lawyer, and magistrate, Durand de Maillande devoted numerous works to Church law: in addition to his dictionary of canon law, he published the Institutes and History of Canon Law (Lyon 1770), a ten-volume work; then The Liberties of the Gallican Church (Lyon 1771), a substantial five-volume treatise; and finally, The Perfect Apostolic Notary (Lyon 1775). Dupin does not cite our edition (ref. 2769) but indicates that this dictionary was published until 1786 in six octavo volumes. He notes in particular that this “Dictionary contains several pieces that are convenient to find gathered together: it is, moreover, an index of the memoirs of the clergy, the treatises of Piales, and some other modern works.”
