    This thesis, along with that of Éric Wenzel, *Le Monitoire à fin de révélations. Normes juridiques, débats doctrinaux et pratiques judiciaires dans le diocèse d'Autun* (doctoral thesis in law, University of Burgundy, 1999), constitutes the only two serious and comprehensive studies on this centuries-old judicial practice, known since the 12th and 13th centuries in the context of the Church's prosecution of heresy. While monitories were subsequently subject to secular authority, it was only with the ordinance of 1670 and then the edict of 1695 that their legal framework was established, and this remained the case until the French Revolution.
