    "By providing us with a new edition of the "Old Customary Law of Poitou," the Society for the History of Law and Institutions of Western France and Mr. R. Filhol, professor at the Faculty of Law of Poitiers, have accomplished a much-needed task: previous editions dated back to the beginning of the 16th century and were almost unusable. Now, in seven hundred and seventy clearly presented articles, enhanced by reproductions of the drawings that complement one of the manuscripts, and equipped with an index and a concordance table with the articles of the old and new customary law of Poitou, the Old Customary Law is immediately and easily accessible: a result all the more interesting because, contrary to a widespread opinion, its text differs significantly on several points from the official version of the customary law of Poitou." This text was carefully established by Mr. Filhol based on the manuscript in the Niort library and is accompanied by sufficient critical apparatus, referring to other manuscripts or handwritten notes in the incunabulum of the Court of Cassation. Mr. Filhol is therefore justified in having wanted, as the preface announces, to make the "Old Customary of Poitou" available to readers immediately, even if it meant surrounding it only with a brief introduction and notes. The drawback, of course, is that the history of the Old Customary, its date as well as its sources and origins, remains to be written.
